Nails need a special tool in order ot make the head of them:

Unfortunately I don't have any good pictures of the process as forging des not really give you much time to take pictures ( unless you take photos of someone else working ). So, here is a drawn pictures on how the process goes:

products

  1. Start material: square bar.

  2. Two sides get sort of dent, some material is isolated for the shaft of the nail.

  3. The shaft and blade part of nail is formed.

  4. Cut point of the nail is formed, the amount of material defines the head of the nail.

  5. Rod is bent from the point where it will be cut off. ( This helps you see on which side the original 'dents' are ).

products

  1. Rod gets broked off in the tool.

  2. Nail head should still be hot, so it can be forged.

  3. The head is hammered into wanted shape.

  4. Nail is somewhat ready.

One still needs to make the end sharp by either just hammering it bit or grinding it.

Notice that the tip of the nail is not point like but more like line or rectangle! This sort of nail needs to be inserted to wood so that it cuts as many grains of wood as possible and won't work like an axe splitting the wood into two.
